What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding uses a tooth coloured resin that is applied and sculpted directly onto the surface of a natural tooth. At Bespoke Dental, your dentist selects a suitable shade, shapes the composite by hand, hardens it with a specialised curing light and then smooths and polishes the surface

Composite bonding can be used to improve the appearance of:

  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Small gaps
  • Uneven or worn edges
  • Minor changes to tooth shape
  • Certain areas of discoloration
  • Damaged teeth that need repair

Because the material is shaped by hand, your dentist can take your existing teeth, bite, facial features and personal preferences into account when planning treatment. This allows the shape, length and shade of the bonding to be tailored to your smile.

What is premium multilayered composite bonding?

Premium multilayered bonding uses a layering approach when building the composite restoration. Different shades and characteristics of composite can be used to recreate details such as colour, depth and translucency within the tooth.

Your dentist can explain the difference between the composite bonding options available and recommend an approach based on your teeth and the result you would like to achieve.

How many teeth do I need composite bonding on?

There is no set number of teeth that should be treated with composite bonding.

Some patients may want to improve a single chipped or uneven tooth, while others may be considering several of the teeth visible when they smile. A 10 or 20-tooth package does not mean that this number of teeth is necessarily right for you.

During your consultation, we’ll assess your teeth and discuss what you would like to change before recommending an appropriate treatment plan.

This also means the total cost of composite bonding can vary considerably from one patient to another. You’ll receive a personalised quote based on the treatment being recommended before deciding whether to proceed.

What happens during composite bonding treatment?

We begin by discussing the changes you would like to make and assessing your teeth and bite. Your dentist can then plan the shape and select a suitable shade for your bonding.

During treatment, we will:

  1. Select a shade that works with your smile
  2. Apply the composite to the agreed teeth
  3. Shape the material by hand
  4. Harden it using a curing light
  5. Smooth and polish the finished result

Composite bonding requires no drilling or injections in most cases. However, the preparation required will depend on your teeth and the treatment being planned.

Because the composite is shaped directly on the tooth, details such as tooth length, edge shape and shade can be considered as part of the overall result.

Composite bonding or veneers?

At Bespoke Dental, composite bonding starts from £290 per tooth, while veneers start from £850 per tooth.

Both treatments can change the appearance of your smile, but they use different techniques and may be suitable for different situations.

Composite bonding may be considered for:

  • Repairing minor chips
  • Closing small gaps
  • Improving worn or uneven edges
  • Making subtle changes to tooth shape
  • Improving certain areas of discolouration

Veneers may be considered for:

  • More extensive changes to the visible tooth surface
  • Cases requiring greater coverage
  • Situations where a different type of restoration is more appropriate

Composite bonding is applied directly to the tooth and is generally considered a more conservative option. Traditional veneers may require some removal of the tooth surface before placement.

The right option will depend on your teeth and what you want to achieve. We can discuss both treatments during a smile makeover consultation, including the expected process, costs and ongoing maintenance.

Looking after composite bonding

Composite bonding can chip, stain or wear over time, so looking after your teeth and restorations is important.

We recommend:

  • Brushing regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Cleaning carefully between your teeth with floss or dental tape
  • Avoiding chewing ice, pens, pencils, nails and other hard objects
  • Following any advice given by your dentist if you grind or clench your teeth
  • Attending regular dental examinations and hygiene appointments

Limiting sugary and acidic foods and drinks can also help support your overall oral health.

How long composite bonding lasts varies depending on factors including your oral hygiene, bite and everyday habits. Regular appointments allow us to check both your natural teeth and the condition of your bonding.

Patients who have received composite bonding at Bespoke Dental can also ask about our aftercare membership. The plan costs £34.99 per month and includes an extended two-year warranty with free repair for chips or fractures, alongside examinations, platinum hygiene visits and other benefits. Separate membership terms and enrolment requirements apply.

Nervous about composite bonding treatment?

If you feel anxious about dental treatment, please let us know. We offer sedation for nervous patients where clinically appropriate.

Conscious sedation can help you feel relaxed and drowsy while remaining conscious during your appointment. We’ll discuss your medical history and explain the process before recommending whether sedation is appropriate for you.

Dental sedation is a separate service and is currently listed from £400 per hour.

Can I spread the cost of composite bonding?

We offer 0% finance, subject to approval and the relevant terms. Our team can explain the finance options available, repayment details and total cost before you make a decision.

We also provide a range of other cosmetic and restorative treatments in Manchester, including Invisalign, teeth whitening, restorative dentistry and dental implants.

If composite bonding isn’t suitable for your teeth, we can explain the alternatives available and help you understand your options.
