Choosing who will carry out your dental implant treatment is a significant decision.
You are trusting someone not only to replace a missing tooth, but to assess your oral health, plan surgery around your individual anatomy and create a result that needs to function comfortably for years to come.
I’m Dr Mohammad Ghafraan Hussain from Bespoke Dental in Manchester, and I have invested heavily in dental implant treatment throughout my career.
One thing I strongly believe is that patients should understand why a treatment is recommended, rather than simply being told what they need.
So, if you are currently comparing dental implant dentists in Manchester, these are the things I would encourage you to look for, and the questions I would ask before choosing who carries out your treatment.
Do You Need a Dental Implant Specialist?
This is one of the first questions patients ask me, and the terminology around implant dentistry can make the answer more confusing than it needs to be. You may come across periodontists, oral surgeons and dentists with a particular interest and extensive postgraduate training in implant dentistry.
Different clinicians may be appropriate for different cases.
What matters is understanding the experience and training of the individual who will actually be planning and carrying out your treatment.
I would always encourage you to ask:
- What training have you completed in dental implant treatment?
- How regularly do you place implants?
- Will you personally plan and carry out my treatment?
- What happens if my case is more complex than expected?
- Can I see examples of cases you have treated?
You should also check that any dentist you are considering is registered with the General Dental Council and ask about their ongoing postgraduate education.
Qualifications matter, but so do experience, planning and clinical judgement.
Experience Matters (But Numbers Don’t Tell the Whole Story)
It’s reasonable to ask a dentist how much experience they have placing dental implants. However, I don’t believe choosing an implant dentist should simply become a competition over who can quote the biggest number.
For me, good implant dentistry starts before an implant is ever placed. The important question is whether an implant is actually the right treatment for that patient.
Bone levels, gum health, your bite, the position of surrounding teeth and your wider dental health can all influence whether treatment is appropriate and how it should be planned.
Sometimes the right decision is to place an implant. Sometimes additional treatment is needed first. Occasionally, an implant may not be the option I recommend at all.
My role is to assess all of that carefully and give you an honest view of what I believe will provide the most predictable long-term result.

Ask How Your Implant Will Be Planned
Modern implant dentistry should involve much more than simply looking at the gap where a tooth used to be. At Bespoke Dental Manchester, I use 3D CBCT imaging where clinically appropriate to understand the anatomy beneath the surface.
A CBCT scan can provide a three-dimensional view of areas including the jawbone and surrounding structures, helping me assess the available bone and plan treatment in much greater detail.
Digital planning is an important part of my approach because every patient’s anatomy is different.
I want to understand what I am dealing with before treatment begins – not discover it during surgery.
When comparing implant dentists, ask how your treatment will be planned and what diagnostic technology will be used in your individual case.
Your Consultation Should Feel Like a Conversation
This is one of the biggest things I would look for when choosing any dentist – an implant consultation should not feel like a sales appointment.
You should have enough time to explain what is bothering you, understand what the dentist has found and ask as many questions as you need.
I want my patients to leave a consultation understanding:
- what is happening with their teeth and gums
- which treatment options are available
- why I am recommending a particular approach
- what the treatment will involve
- any relevant risks or limitations
- how long treatment is likely to take
- what it will cost
You should never feel pressured into making a decision there and then.
Dental implants are an investment in your health and quality of life. You deserve enough information to decide whether treatment – and the person providing it – feels right for you.

Look at the Dentist’s Previous Work
Before and after photographs can be useful when choosing an implant dentist, particularly if you are considering more extensive treatment.
Don’t just look for dramatic transformations.
Look at whether the results appear natural and appropriate for the individual patient. Ask whether the dentist has treated cases similar to yours and whether they can explain how they approached them.
I believe showing and discussing previous cases is also an opportunity to educate patients.
Two people may both be missing the same tooth but require very different treatment because their bone, gums, bite and surrounding teeth are different.
That is why I would be cautious of anyone promising a particular result before properly assessing you.
Read Reviews – But Look Beyond the Star Rating
Reviews can tell you a lot about a dental practice, but I would look beyond the overall score. Pay attention to what patients say about the actual experience.
Did they feel listened to? Was treatment explained properly? Did they understand the costs? How were nervous patients treated? Did they feel supported throughout the process?
Technical ability matters enormously, but so does trust.
Implant treatment can take place over several appointments, so you need to feel comfortable asking your dentist questions and confident that you understand what is happening at each stage.
Ask Who Will Actually Be Treating You
This is particularly important if you are comparing larger dental implant providers.
Ask whether the person you meet at your consultation will be the person who plans and carries out your treatment.
My preference is for continuity.
I want to understand your starting point, what you want to achieve and any concerns you have before we begin. I can then use that information when planning your treatment and continue looking after you throughout the process.
For me, implant dentistry isn’t simply about placing the implant. It’s about taking responsibility for the complete result.
What if You’re Nervous About Dental Implant Treatment?
Tell your dentist.
Dental anxiety is extremely common, and being nervous shouldn’t prevent you from having a proper conversation about your options.
I take time during consultations to understand any previous experiences or specific concerns you may have.
For particularly anxious patients, we can also discuss dental sedation where appropriate.
There is no benefit in rushing someone through treatment. I would much rather you understand what is going to happen and feel comfortable with the plan before we begin.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?
Cost is understandably part of the decision when comparing dental implant dentists.
However, make sure you understand exactly what a quoted price includes.
Implant treatment isn’t identical for every patient. Your final cost can depend on your individual clinical situation and whether you require any additional treatment before the implant can be placed.
Following your consultation and assessment, I will explain the treatment I recommend and provide a clear, personalised treatment plan so you understand the proposed treatment and associated costs before deciding whether to proceed.
We also offer 0% finance options, subject to eligibility, for patients who would prefer to spread the cost of eligible treatment.
Choosing a Dental Implant Dentist in Manchester
If you’re researching dental implants in Manchester, my biggest piece of advice is simple:
Choose the clinician, not just the clinic.
Look at their training and experience. Ask how they plan their cases. Look at their previous work. Find out who will actually carry out your treatment.
Most importantly, choose someone who is prepared to explain their thinking and who you trust to tell you when treatment is – and isn’t – right for you.
That’s the approach I take at Bespoke Dental.
I provide dental implant treatment from our private clinic in Eccles, Manchester, welcoming patients from Salford, Monton, Worsley and across Greater Manchester.
If you’re considering dental implants and want to understand what may be possible in your individual case, you can book a consultation with me.
We’ll assess your dental health, discuss what you would like to achieve and talk through the options available to you before you make any decisions.
