When do you need to have your wisdom tooth removed?
Sometimes, a wisdom tooth does not have enough room in the jaw to grow and develop normally and becomes trapped in the gums or under the bone. This is known as an impacted tooth.
When impacted wisdom teeth grow in a straight direction, they don’t cause symptoms and don’t always need to be removed. However, when an impacted wisdom tooth becomes infected, damages other teeth, or causes other dental problems, you may experience some of these symptoms:
- Red, swollen gums, tender, or bleeding gums
- Recurrent infection of soft tissue behind the last tooth in the lower jaw
- Bad breath
- An unpleasant taste in your mouth
- Have difficulty opening your mouth
- Earache
- Crowding of teeth
If you are experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible and let your dentist determine if a tooth extraction is the best course of action for you. We look forward to taking care of your oral health. With Bespoke Dental & Implant Clinic, you can rest assured that you are in safe hands.
“I recently had two wisdom teeth extracted by Dr Mohammad Ghafraan Hussain. I’ve never had such a great experience in the dentist’s chair. I was coming from a botched tooth removal x2. The NHS told me it would be about 18 months before they could treat me, and I was in daily pain. I booked an evening appointment on the same day and felt at ease with the consultation.
The procedure took place the very next day, and I was gently sedated, felt nothing and healed well thanks to some stitches.
I’m so grateful to have this nightmare behind me. I’d never hesitate to see Dr Mohammad Ghafraan Hussain, as it was genuinely a relaxing experience. He listened to all my worries, and within 24 hours, everything was taken care of. I’m so grateful to him and his team for their help.
I recommend him highly for anyone who wants things done properly and painlessly”

Why do you need to get your wisdom teeth removed?
Impacted wisdom teeth can cause several problems in your mouth if you do not get them pulled when necessary.
- Damage to adjacent teeth. When an impacted wisdom tooth is tilted toward the second molar, it exerts pressure on the second molar, increasing the chances of infection in the area or causing it to shift, leading to crowding in the jaw.
- Formation of cysts or cancerous lesions. Wisdom teeth develop in sacs within the jawbone. In some instances, these sacs can fill with fluid, forming cysts that can damage nearby structures like the jawbone, teeth, and nerves. Although rare, tumours may also develop.
- Tooth decay and gum disease. Partially impacted teeth are hard to clean and thus more susceptible to decay, cavities, and gum disease. They also allow trapped bacteria to gain entry into the soft tissues supporting the tooth and the underlying bone, inviting infection.
If you delay the extraction, you could have severe problems after surgery, such as heavy bleeding and fractured teeth, severe numbness and minor loss of movement in your jaw. These troubles could last a few days or continue throughout your lifetime.
You can’t prevent impactions from happening, but you can avoid any painful symptoms by seeing your dentist every six months. Regular dental visits allow your dentist to carefully monitor the growth and emergence of your wisdom teeth, which is especially important if they predict complications, and extract them before they cause damage or pain.
