About Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a bespoke-designed prosthesis that fits over a damaged, weakened, or heavily restored tooth, protecting the structure.

At Bespoke Dental, we pride ourselves on a tailored experience, using digital intraoral scanners to design crowns with exceptional accuracy. There are no messy traditional impressions, just a fast, comfortable scan that helps us create a crown perfectly matched to your smile.

Crowns are crafted from a range of high-quality materials, including zirconia, Emax, and porcelain, chosen to suit your aesthetic goals and budget.

How long do dental crowns last?

Answer

A crown is recommended when a tooth has lost a significant part of its structure, for example, after a large filling, a break, or root canal treatment. Without a crown, the remaining tooth can become weak and vulnerable to further damage. Crowns also form an essential part of dental implant treatment, sitting on top of the implant to replicate the look of a natural tooth.

The process typically takes two appointments. At your first visit, your tooth is gently reshaped using precision filing techniques (removing just 0.3–1mm), a digital scan is taken, and a temporary crown is placed. Your permanent crown is then custom-made to match the colour, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth. It’s fitted at your second appointment. Both stages are carried out under local anaesthetic, and IV sedation is available if you’d prefer a more relaxed experience.

Caring for a crown is straightforward. Treat it as you would a natural tooth: brush twice daily, floss carefully around the crown margin, and attend regular hygiene appointments. Avoid habitually biting hard objects, and if you grind your teeth at night, a night guard can help protect both your crown and your natural teeth.

With good oral hygiene, a dental crown can last between 10 and 20 years and in many cases, even longer. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing regularly, and attending check-ups twice a year will all help extend the life of your crown. If you grind your teeth, speak to your dentist; we can recommend solutions to protect your crown from unnecessary wear.
