About Dentures & Bridges

Dentures are removable appliances which replace missing teeth and soft tissue without surgery. Bridges are fixed, non-removable solutions ideal when you have one or two adjacent missing teeth. Anchored to your existing teeth, a bridge is permanently fitted and functions just like your natural teeth.

Our denture and bridge options consist of:

Implant Bridges: Anchored directly to the jawbone, these stable dentures remove the need for adhesives. They mimic natural teeth in function and appearance, supporting smiling, eating, and speaking.

Bar Supported Dentures: Combining the reliability of dental implants with the convenience of removable dentures, these consist of a metal bar (custom-fit to your jaw) which connects to implants. The dentures then clip onto this bar, making it stable whilst also being removable for easy cleaning.

How do Implant Dentures work?

How do I care for implant dentures?

Who is suitable for Implant Dentures?

How do implant-supported dentures work?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of dental bridges?

What types of Bridges are there?

Answer

2-4 Implants are surgically positioned in the jawbone, allowing custom-made abutments to connect the implants to the denture. A denture is then locked/clicked onto the abutments. There are a variety of connections and materials available which make a difference to the final finish and strength.

Remove them twice a day in order to gently brush around the implant abutments and clean the dentures. An annual inspection is very important to ensure its functioning and to assess the quality of your mouth and soft tissues.

After several years you may find there is mild wear and tear of the implant abutments and the denture does not lock in as firmly as it once did. New components can be replaced in the denture fitting to make it feel tight and firm as before.

All adults with stable oral health and medical conditions are suitable. If we find any risk factors which may affect the treatment, this will be explained in full.

These use a bespoke-designed bar which locks into the denture. The bar connects all the implants together, providing enhanced strength and stability.

Advantages:

  • A quicker and more cost-effective option for replacing one or two missing teeth
  • Fixed permanently, no need to remove them
  • Feel and function naturally

Disadvantages:

  • Rely on adjacent teeth for support, which may need to be reshaped
  • If the bridge fails or decay develops underneath, it can go undetected
  • Once the supporting teeth are reshaped, future bridge replacement may be more complex

Bridges can be made from many materials including porcelain/zirconia/metallic and are generalised into two categories:

Bonded Bridge – Bonding the bridge onto the adjacent tooth using special dental cements.

Conventional Bridge – This procedure is similar to having a crown, the dental surgeon reshapes the adjacent tooth/teeth to allow a bespoke bridge to be fitted.

How long do Bridges last?

There is no defined timeline, and for many people, bridges last a lifetime. Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups play a significant role in longevity. Conventional bridges last a lot longer but require reshaping teeth and cost more.
