About Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars which may start to erupt aged 18-25 years old. Unfortunately for many people they cause more harm than good and often require removing. Wisdom teeth vary in their anatomy and are unique to each individual. A wisdom tooth can have anywhere between 1 and four roots and can present itself horizontal in the jaw and even inverted in some cases.

About Extractions

A tooth extraction visit for many people causes nightmares. Our aim is to make your visit as comfortable as possible. Primarily we are here to help you save the tooth but in situations when the tooth carries a hopeless prognosis and other options have been exhausted, we will make the extraction appear effortless. At Bespoke Dental & Implant Clinic you are able to undergo surgery on the same day with our experienced Dental Surgeons.

The reason for advanced skills is due to the nature of the procedure which often involves minor oral surgery. This involves making an incision into the gums, precision bone removal and careful dissection of the wisdom tooth. Upon completion there are normally dissolvable stitches in place.

The procedure is carried out painlessly, rest assured our Dental Surgeons carry years of experience and have safely removed thousands of wisdom teeth.

If you are concerned about the procedure and feel you can not tolerate dental injections, please consider our sedation service. This works wonders for patients who have dental phobia or dental anxiety. It involves a cannula and sedative drug allowing you to fall into a pleasant dreamy state. The wisdom tooth can be removed once you are sedated and you won’t feel a thing! Please speak to us to discuss your concerns and preferences.

The treatment time is impacted by the complexity and approach used for the procedure. Majority of cases completed under local anaesthetic are completed within a 45 minute appointment from start to finish. If you prefer intravenous sedation you can expect most appointments to last approximately 2 hours.

Recovery time varies from person to person. This can depend on many factors such as the complexity of the procedure, surgical expertise, medical history and meticulous after care. 99% of patients recover within 3-7 days following the procedure resuming normal activities and normal diets.

You can expect to be on a liquid diet for the first 2 days then slowly easing into a soft mushy diet up to one week. For very complex procedures it is recommended all hard and chewy foods are avoided for a minimum of 2 weeks.

During your consultation, the Dental Surgeon has facilities to carry out special investigations including 3D CBCT Scans. This allows the surgeon to carefully map out your nerve prior to carrying out surgery. At this stage a well informed decision can be made whether to proceed with the removal or consider an alternative approach such as a coronectomy. A coronectomy involves surgically removing the crown portion of the tooth and leaving the roots in situ to prevent any risk of damaging the inferior dental alveolar nerve.

No procedure is risk free and lower wisdom teeth carry the risk of temporary or permanent nerve damage resulting in numbness, tingling or chronic neuropathic pain. Therefore, the initial planning and investigation is crucial to eliminate this risk.

At Bespoke Dental & Implant Clinic our lead Dental Surgeon, Dr Ghafraan Hussain has over 10 years of experience of safely removing wisdom teeth in primary and secondary care under local and intravenous sedation. As an approximate figure we expect less than 0.5% cases to suffer from any form of permanent damage and the high risk cases can be established in advance of the procedure.

I first visited in an emergency appointment due to tooth pain, was seen that evening and left completely pain free! Dr Nisar has completed my root canal treatment and is in the process of placing a crown.   Could not thank Dr ghafraan enough! I came in with so much anxiety had 2 sedation treatment in a month and by the third I could do it without sedation which I thought would never happen!
