Dental Implants require precision surgery and meticulous oral hygiene to maintain them. In the right candidate with appropriate care they can last a life time. However, similar to natural teeth, if the gingival health is not maintained bacteria can accumulate around dental implants causing gum disease; bleeding of the gums, recession and implant thread exposure. The human body is always changing throughout our lifetime and severe medical conditions which affect the blood, bone density or rare conditions such as cancer will impact the quality of the bone surrounding the implants and will reduce their longevity.

We would advise you to floss and brush twice a day in order to maintain a healthy mouth. Following the first year of having dental implants fitted we advise 6 monthly assessments and an annual inspection at our clinics thereafter. In addition, visiting the Dental Hygienist twice a year will provide the supportive therapy you need.

The major breakthrough was in 1952 when by chance an Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Branemark discovered that titanium fused to the femur (thigh bone) of rabbits. The discovery then led to the first titanium dental implant in a human volunteer in 1965. Since this discovery of titanium dental implants have undergone multiple modifications helping us achieve up to 99% success.
