About Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars which may start to erupt between the ages of 18 and 25 years old. For many people, they cause more harm than good and often require removal. A wisdom tooth can have between 1 and four roots and can present itself horizontally in the jaw and even inverted in some cases.

Reasons wisdom teeth need removing:

Tooth decay affecting the wisdom tooth or neighbouring teeth.

Gum disease or infection around the tooth.

Pericoronitis – painful inflammation of the surrounding gum tissue.

Dental abscess or swelling

Cysts forming around an impacted tooth.

Pressure or damage to adjacent teeth.

If you’re nervous about tooth extraction, our dental sedation process makes the experience stress-free.

Answer

Wisdom tooth removal at Bespoke Dental is a carefully planned procedure carried out by experienced dental surgeons. Depending on the position and complexity of the tooth, it may involve a simple extraction or minor oral surgery — which includes a small incision into the gum, precise removal of any bone where necessary, and careful extraction of the tooth. Upon completion there are normally dissolvable stitches in place.

The treatment time is influenced by the procedure’s complexity and approach. The majority of cases are completed under local anaesthetic within 45 minutes. For intravenous sedation, this may last 2 hours.

Recovery varies from person to person, depending on factors like the procedure’s complexity, medical history, and aftercare. 99% of patients recover within 3-7 days following the procedure, resuming normal activities and normal diets.

You’ll be on a liquid diet for the first 2 days, then slowly ease into a soft mushy diet for up to one week. For very complex procedures, it is recommended that all hard and chewy foods be avoided for a minimum of 2 weeks.

Lower wisdom teeth sit close to the inferior dental alveolar nerve, and in some cases there is a small risk of temporary or permanent numbness, tingling, or nerve-related discomfort. At Bespoke Dental, we take nerve safety extremely seriously. Where there is any potential risk, we carry out 3D CBCT scanning to precisely map the nerve position before surgery. In high-risk cases, an alternative procedure called a coronectomy – where the crown of the tooth is removed and the roots are left in place – may be recommended to protect the nerve entirely. No procedure is entirely without risk, but thorough planning significantly reduces it.

At Bespoke Dental, wisdom tooth extraction starts from £350, with a consultation and X-ray included. Surgical wisdom tooth removal starts from £450. More complex or high-risk cases are priced on assessment following specialist review and imaging. 0% finance is available to help spread the cost. All pricing is discussed openly at your consultation, there are no hidden fees.
